A Message from Jackie A. Strange
Former Deputy Postmaster General
United States Postal Service
Never before in our history has there been a greater need
for individuals to embrace the revitalization and enforcement
of ethics. During the last decade, we have seen great leaders fall,
institutions fail, and nations falter because of unethical practices.
Now is the time for all people to step back, look within, and
evaluate their ethical behavior.
Since the beginning of time, ethics has continued to be the
moral fiber that makes man do what is right. It is the axis of
successful enterprise within our society, and it is on this premise
that we succeed or fail. This concept has never been challenged,
nor has it changed. As man's knowledge increases and behaviors
change, ethics remains the core of this ideology.
Individuals and organizations gain empowerment through ethical
practices, and through these practices trust is built. Because trust
opens communications and stimulates motivation, people work at
their highest potential and expectation, and the organization profits.
You act and people around you react. Therefore, you must
constantly ensure that you are doing the right things that protect
individuals and organizations. Does every decision you make
individually or organizationally reflect this attitude? Do you
have the moral conviction to stand alone, if necessary? In the
face of adversity, are you willing to fight for those principles in
which you believe? Are you willing to forego personal gain rather
than compromise your integrity?
Every day you are setting examples and making decisions
that individuals and/or organizations follow. Will they rise or
fall because of you?
