Poems About My Self-Esteem

This book of poetry was birthed out of my fi rst teaching assignment of students with
special needs in a New York City Public Elementary School September, 1996. As a young
person, I can remember having a passion for helping people who are less fortunate based
on my own life experience of overcoming an emotional and abusive childhood. The memory of
my fi rst day of teaching will forever be in my mind of having an almost fatal experience of losing
one of my eyes because of a fl ying chair that hit the wall just as I opened the classroom door of 15
students who appeared to be very angry and fearful.
