Among the purposes for which this narration was produced are to augment the history of the California pioneers, to write an important chapter in the book of German immigration to America, and to collect and preserve the early history of the German element of this young city and county of Los Angeles. IT is actually more than a narration of a ripe and noble experience. It is, beyond any reasonable comparison, the most accurate composite picture we have ever had of that time. It is the mirror of who and what the Germans are and were that laid the foundation for a community, which is now the wonder of the world. It is also my intention to perpetuate the memory of those who, by their honorable labors and heroism, helped to make that history. Angelenos believed that a man may grow rich without deserving to be hanged.
