Short Summary
The story about Trudy's House begins on the Oregon Coast a little before WWII. I chose this time to introduce Trudy and to give the reader an understanding of her life. After WWII started Trudy and her husband see an opportunity to separate from a very shaky marriage. She wants more personal freedom, and her husband realizes that the war would affect his auto business. They both find employment in war work in separate places. Their 12-year old son is boarded with relatives until they can get established. Her husband dies suddenly and Trudy is forced to face reality. She is a woman with no special training, a poor education, and no talents. However, she had health, luck, determination, and several good friends. Eventually, she was able to care for herself and her son at a time when women were just becoming accepted in the workplace.
