Cute, vivacious, talented, and trusting, Alfreda (Cookie) Ashton was a dancer and a headline act on Midwest vaudeville circuits for six seasons. In nineteen twenty-nine, at the age of sixteen on the verge of a career in movies, she ran off, got married, and threw away her bright future.
Sixty-seven years later, in January of nineteen ninety-six, her husband died.
While she clung to the love and security of her dog Chico, her vindictive and selfish children plotted against each other, scheming to get what they could, for themselves--before Mom died, too. As the dark curtains of dementia closed in, she lost everything she had except memories of the happiest times of her life--when she was a dancer.
