Historic Oxford Orphanage, formerly St. Johnâs College, was established in 1872. It is the oldest orphanage in North Carolina and one of the oldest Masonic institutions in the United States.
This work is a factual and moving account of the experiences of a timid, disillusioned, seven-year-old who, following the sudden death of his father, a U. S. civil service engineer, in 1946, was sent to live for a decade among four hundred children and staff members at Oxford Orphanage, and of how the tradition-rich institutionâs odd customs, strict order of discipline and work ethic molded his emerging personality and influenced his moral, religious and political beliefs well into adulthood.
