This is the last of nine satiric novels (The Eddie Devlin Compendium) tracking a gaggle of characters at intervals since 1929. In No. 8 (1984-85) Eddie Devlin wed a wealthy widow and retired from the newspaper business.
Subsequently, elsewhere in the world, Ronald Reagan, a former film actor playing a President, proposed a "missile shield" that did not prove technically feasible. The USSR fell apart. Iraq invaded Kuwait and a coalition led by the U.S. scotched that, but let Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein off the hook. Much of this proved exciting TV fare. William Jefferson Clinton, elected President, was linked to a White House intern, which proved more exciting still. In the nation's heartland, however, the big issues remained the going price for hog bellies and the weather.
Eddie Devlin, meanwhile, became a world traveler and a food company executive. And now, in 1999, with other survivors spared for dramatic purposes (Whip Rahilly, Slick Riordan, John Keefe, Wolfe Strudel), here he is in Golden Willows, a Winatchee Falls Senior Continuing Care Community beset by (of all things!) allegations of (Heaven help us!) sexual harassment. With illustrations by the author.
