Within the inner circle of Detroit's
cultural neighborhood of Greektown
lies the framing analogy of the
plight of society's child. The main
character is Lydia O'Shanick, a
poor little rich girl wounded deep
from childhood. Who she exactly
is, is her transformation as she
moves on. She evolves through a
twist of fate, a fl ash of a moment
that swept her forward through the altar of destiny, thrusting
her into a life that moved beyond the commonplace, beyond
the idiosyncrasies and the ethical values of her generation's
modeled normalities of society and religion. And what of its
title, Magdalene? Let he who is without sin cast the fi rst stone.
It too becomes an analogy that is mirrored in the ending.
