Maria Segura - Writer/Artist Statement

I have been writing for as long as I could remember. As a young girl, I would often sit quietly in my room and color. I'd also write short stories to go along with the pieces. It was something I truly enjoyed. But what I think really influenced me to write was the TV series, “My Little Pony.” I loved the show and for some unknown reason, I just wanted to write more.

One day, while the house stood quiet, I grabbed a bundle of poster boards out of my room, a box of markers and crayons and started to draw, color and write the next episode of My Little Pony. I was really on a roll! Nothing was stopping me now. Well, at least that's what I thought at the time.
My mom walked by and she asked, “Ooh. That's nice. What are you coloring?” “I'm writing a book mom. The next episode of My Little Pony. One day, I'm going to be a Writer!”

As the years gone by, I continued my passion for writing. Poems, short stories, I even joined the high school newspaper and took a college course at Columbia College in Chicago, Illinois. Believe me. The passion was there! I studied Broadcast Journalism at the University of Urbana-Champaign and continued my studies at Roosevelt College in Chicago, Illinois.

And finally. My first break. The opportunity to work at Fox TV in Chicago. My passion for writing also led me to Wisconsin where I worked for several Radio Stations. I won many awards. For me, it was a dream come true. But something was missing. That book. That passion to write a book.

Then, my first son was born. My beautiful little boy. Having him brought back the imagination I once had as a child. I began to make up cute little stories for him. He loved them all and he'd giggle so sweetly. When I had a moment, I'd quickly run to my desk and start writing the stories down. I did not want to forget!
I chose one story. The Little Crocodile. I started working on the piece. Simple drawings here and there. I even published a few books but for me, the book was not up to par. The book just wasn't ready.

And then, we moved to Wausau, Wisconsin. I started up a little business teaching Spanish to kids, began to improve my drawings, decided to translate the material in Spanish and with the inspiration of my children and students, the moment felt right. My book, “Don't be Scared Little Crocodile / No Tengas Miedo Cocodrilito,” was complete. The book is a simple story with a positive message. All you have to do is try.
