Ike Hoyle, player/coach of Tops AC, is drawn back to the game when the rules are changed to make it safer. With the legalization of the forward pass, he envisions an open game of sweeping speed and razzle-dazzle plays; something more than a pile of stacked bodies relocating between chalk lines; something exciting enough to save the shaky professional leagues from folding.
Team owner, Captain Mott, is only interested in one kind of speed— a quick buck. Whether selling the team’s shower-water or having his players serve drinks at society-balls, he revels in his schemes to bolster the “team’s pension fund”—fiercely opposing any change that might intrude on his shyster dreams.
A championship season allows both men the opportunity to achieve their goals—unfortunately it also allows their inevitable clash to play out on a grander scale.
