Math: Insights, Myths, or a bit of both?
* A presentation supported by figures is more credible than one that is not.
* Numbers are neutral. They are not affected by cultural, economic, and political differences that influence people and therein lies their strength. 1+ 1 = 2, for example, is universal for all people, countries, and political system.
* Numbers give weight to a review through the sense of precision they communicate, thereby advancing it to a plane which commands recognition, respect, and acceptance.
* Mathematical proof is the most reliable means for objectivity establishing truth.
* The precision of mathematical methods guarantees unassailable conclusions which serve as pillars of stability and strength in a word besieged by foggy thinking, prejudice, and rampant special interests.
* Mathematically derived conclusions are indisputable because they are based on deductive logic, which is untainted by bias and ideology.
A substantial part of my career as a mathematics educator has been devoted to addressing these views. This book is intended as a sharing with teachers, students, and other who are interested in mathematics education of my concerns, problems encountered, and means developed for addressing such views.
