My father and mother immigrated to the US from Naples, Italy and eventually
settled in Brooklyn, NY. I was the youngest of nine siblings. Papa died when I
was just three years old. Being the youngest had certain advantages, like having
most of Mama's attention. Even though we were poor, I felt secure and happy.
I thought everyone was Italian and I only spoke Italian until I was six years old.
But when Mama died I was eight years old, any security I had was suddenly gone.
My world, as I knew it, came to an end.
