Light beyond Darkness

Light beyond Darkness continues the story of a life and spiritual journey that the author began in Lighting the Lamps (2003). In this second memoir Fred Garel chronicles his volunteer work in âcooking therapyâ at a Catholic Worker house and a psychiatric outreach program, volunteer service in church shelters, meetings with remarkable men and women in political movements and faith communities, experiences with healers (and destroyers). At the same time he looks back on the amazing changes that New York has seen since 1926, when at age five he came to the City with his Scottish-born mother, leaving his father on a chain gang in the South.
