This is the story of one man’s journey down the river of life from childhood in England in the early part of the twentieth century to old age in California in 2012. It describes how the family misfortunes led to a miserable boyhood and a diffi cult adolescence, compounded by his own diffi cult nature. He tells how he survived World War II including active service in the RAF and a stint in a German POW camp. He later studied engineering and science and designed a key part of the fi ring circuit for the British atom bomb. In middle age he emigrated to America and became an executive in a high-tech company. The story is told with humour and great frankness (without being titillating) and the writing has been seen as markedly appealing.
