Having a pet is a big part of many children’s lives. It helps teach them about responsibility and love. And for many, it is a first lesson about loss.

Based on a true story, author Linda Regalia Stankey’s Saying Good-Bye tells of a family’s first experience with a pet. Carrie desperately wanted a pet, and her parents agreed on a kitten they name Kiki. He grew to be a happy and lovable cat. One beautiful day, Carrie tied Kiki by the barn while the family was away. Sadly, they return home to a tragedy.
