The Moonless Sky

I didn’t give much reason to accept my own secret of being a princess, but I have moments of doing so for the past year, hearing that if I had accepted, it would let me follow in the footsteps my mother had followed. I stared without any movement across the border of the room, into the eyes of a man-eater, and he didn’t look right back at me pleasantly. Surely this wasn’t a way to know a secret, in a place someone knows, someone I feared. Cared for even. That should silicify to count for something. I felt that if I ever left my mother in Calgary, I would be tracing a death note. But the horrific thing was I couldn’t bring myself to decide on that situation. When life hands you wild-time happiness that’s way beyond your grasp, it is possible to take what you can get. The man smiles in an absurd way as he blurs forward to slay me.
