When Mr. George F. Masterman, an ex-army surgeon of the British army, was hired by Carlos Lopez to work in the almost unknown Paraguay, he never imagined that he would be in the middle of a terrible war, accused of treason and tortured. Although he helped the Paraguayans in the war effort working in field hospitals, he was unjustly accused of treason, imprisoned and tortured by Lopez, but luckily survived to tell the tale. It is the story of the Paraguayan War (1865-1870) told by a non-military.
This edition is a fully revised version based on the second edition published in 1870, with all the original illustrations and new footnotes that explain some obscure points of the text.
