But this was too much, she was sure the thief or thieves were the same each time. The locks, new Segal locks at a cost of five dollars each, were smashed with considerable labor, attesting to the thief's amateur stand­ ing. The hour of the theft seemed always to be the same. The noise the thief must surely have made did not arouse the neighbors. Leah was more inclined to believe, though refused to admit, that they had heard but chose to ignore.
