This book was written and illustrated through the help of Angela Pierce's four year old son, Michael Lawson Pierce. The main character, Drake, is based on Michael's imaginary friend that helps him to cope with his every day challenges in life. Angela's observance of her son and how he uses his imagination and creativity to cope in life is what has motivated this story. Drake and Me is a story about a young boy who has a disability that affects him both physically and emotionally. Other children bully him and are not very nice to him because he is different. It is through the help of Drake, his imaginary friend, that helps the boy to understand that we are all special no matter what others say or do. It is the boy who also teaches others, the readers of this story, that we too can help others to understand the importance of being a good person and treating others nice in life. That being a good person makes you feel good inside and makes you an all around strong person as well. Angela hopes that by reading this book to your children that it will help them to understand that they are very special in their own way and that it is important to not only know this about themselves but also to help others to know how special they are as well.
