Irwin, Lieutenant-Colonel and Assistant Adjutant-General, wrote an account of the notorious court marshaling of Fitz John Porter after the Battle of Second Bull Run which became part of the well known Battles & Leaders of the Civil War series. It discusses the reasons for the court martial and the subsequent reversal of the findings.
