Excerpt: Mårten Hagström, (born 27 April 1971), is the rhythm guitarist for the Swedish experimental metal band Meshuggah. He joined the band after the release of their first album, which allowed Jens Kidman to focus on his vocal performances. He is known for his strong and complex rhythm guitar playing. Hagström has cited Rush, James Hetfield, Squarepusher, Strapping Young Lad, Candlemass, and GISM as influences. In a Metal Injection interview he has said, "You can't play an instrument for the technicality of it. It's a tool you use it to get what's in here and here (points to heart and head) out there." He's also said when he was growing up everybody in Sweden was trying to be a guitar virtuoso which made him want to be solely a rhythm guitarist. Although fellow Meshuggah guitarist Fredrik Thordendal plays all of the leads and solos and writes more of Meshuggah's songs, Hagström entirely wrote an instrumental, "Acrid Placidity" on the album Destroy Erase Improve, showing his melodicism within the band. Hagström and Meshuggah drummer Tomas Haake have been playing together ever since 6th grade in school. Guitars:Hagström's current main guitars are Ibanez Custom 8-String which feature RG-shaped or Iceman-shaped alder bodies with 3-piece maple bolt-on/neck-thru necks (30" {750mm}), rosewood fingerboards (no inlays), fixed bridge (actually an Ibanez FX-Edge fixed tremolo), one volume, one tone, and one Lundgren Model 8 pickup. Hagström has used Nevborn 8-string custom guitars before Ibanez ... More: http://booksllc.net/?id=5411531
