This is the second book in a five-book series. The first book introduces Ted and his family and covers his move to Grandpa and Grandma’s house. The second book is about Ted and his best friend, a musician named Woody. Woody helped Ted get started working on his music with his guitar. He also worked on placing his fingers on the cardboard piano keyboard he had found. It wasn’t music yet; he just wanted to follow the notes. When they played their music on Saturday, it gave Ted long hours of practice. Now Ted will bring his dog, Spot, into their little, street-corner act and let him do his headstands, back flips, and bark just for fun. With hunger at the door, Ted learns to go by the trash cans in the allies and search for anything of value people throw away. Unfortunately, this got him the nickname of Dump Dipper, which he had a hard time living down. Grandpa teaches Ted to plow with his mules, Red and Kate. Now he can make a little money by plowing the spring gardens for the city folks. Ted learned to help Grandma with the dishes and cleaning up the kitchen as they visited most evenings. He usually ended his choirs by going to the well with Spot to leave the water bucket full for the night.
