Through the Magic Door

The myriad signiÞcances of a serious reader's library is evocatively demonstrated in this relatively unknown little work by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Through the Magic Door is Conan Doyle's casually eloquent tour of the cherished books on his own shelves, and I can't recall reading anything which better conveys a sense of what it means to take books to heart. As the author surveys the contents of his treasured bookroom — "no volume there which is not a dear, personal friend" — each book prompts an essay in appreciation, affectionate reflections both personal and literary.
