The scene of Harold Frederic's "In the Valley" is laid in the valley of the Mohawk, and the time in which the drama passes is during that period which elapsed while the British and the French were maneuvering for the possession of that fair land and during the Revolution. A royal Governor holds sway over the colony, and the society of the period is pervaded with an air of courtliness that belonged to a British possession, even though that possession was in the wild western woods of the New World. It is easy to see that here is an opportunity for an exceedingly picturesque tale, and the author has done well with his materials. It is a pictorial work of fiction in a historical setting.
