Eugene Raymond Hall was born in Imes, Kansas, on 11 May 1902, the only child of Wilbur Downs and Susan Effie (Donovan) Hall. In 1927, he became Curator of Mammals at the Museum of Vertebrate Zoology, a post he held until 1944. During that period he conducted extensive field work on mammals in Nevada, leading to the publication in 1946 of The Mammals of Nevada, still regarded by mammalogists as among the best of state faunal works.
