The victors get to write history; but there always is the other side of the story.
The whole German Army in April 1945 was retreating along the Russian Front. As the regular Army troops retreated the decimated Waffen-SS battalions fought a rearguard action.
Oberstgruppenfuhrer "Papa" Hausser orders the top 40 heroes from Army Group G to assemble at a Russian Hunting Lodge. All of the soldiers are recipients of the coveted Knight's Cross.
The German Army has heard of Field Marshall Paulus' surrender and the execution of all German soldiers who wore the Totenkopf-SS emblem. Hausser has devised a plan to save his heroes. He has assembled captured Russian uniforms and weapons and disguises his men as a Russian Penal Battalion.
The novel focuses on four of the survivors.
ROLF ZISSLER, returns to his family farm in the Russian Zone and experiences the extreme cruelty of their Russian masters.
TOMAS HOECKER, returns to Hamburg in the British Zone and is recruited by British Intelligence.
BARON ALEX-PAUL BERGMANN, survives in the American Zone and operates his family's world famous vineyard in Idar-Oberstein on the Nahe River.
UWE HAAS, ends up in the French Zone and continues his murder activities as a hired killer.
