It's been almost forty years since the events occurred that gave me the material for this novel-enough time for positive changes to be made within the United States Army.
The novel is a compelling historical fiction based on a five-hundred page United States Army Inspector General's Report. The report details extreme drug abuse and all-sides racism taking place in military units located at Baumholder, Germany during the 1970-78 time frame.
It is time the truth is told using fiction as the apparatus.
Drug abuse, all-sides racism, poor military leadership all have been a problem in our military since Valley Forge, but we have always had enough good military leaders to control those problems-except after the Vietnam War. For a commander to openly admit he had a racial or a major drug problem was career ending.
The Vietnam War took away the priority status our military in Europe held since the end of WWII and training almost came to a halt in Europe. Money for supplies was very critical, and the troops ended up bored turning to drugs that were readily available. Recruiting policies allowed for gang members to join the military under the "Buddy System" and guaranteed they would remain together until their first duty assignment. This practice placed intact gangs from America's Ghettos in military units.
The author used his first-hand experiences serving as a combat arms unit commander in Germany to write the novel. He changed names and compressed the timeline and events for the novel, but almost all the incidents are based on true events from the extreme drug abuse and racism to the Death Angels, White Slavery, arson and murder.
