The private taxi raced down the winding road from Beirut to Damascus. Daliyah looked out the window at the destruction of the war she was escaping-charred villages, smouldering factories and a burning bus. She was relieved that Marwan, her 8-year-old son beside her, had his head buried in his Nintendo DS.
She peered out the window again, but this time looked up at the sky and silently asked God: What are you doing? Why are you sending me back to him?
Every time she had tried to leave him, something would force her to return to the man who didn't love her, the man who had repeatedly hurt her. But a war? That seemed a little extreme.
She was sad. She had vowed never to go back to Milan. She didn't know that fate had other plans for her and that only by going back would she find the love she had been waiting for all her life.
