In CharlesTown, South Carolina in January 1775 war clouds gather and Patriot preparations for war are well underway. Peggy Monaghan's two brothers drill with the militia. Tommy Lynch, the husband of Peggy's good friend Elisabeth, drills with the militia. Ned Forsythe, brother of another good friend, like many Carolinians sent abroad for their education, returns to fight but Ned instead of joining the militia goes north to join the Continental Army to escape the gossip in CharlesTown, for Ned was obliged "for the sake of honor" to marry in England. However, with the threat of a British Naval attack on the city, he returns, and as the Revolution, the warfare, and the British occupation unfold, Ned and Peggy fall in love in spite of the iron-clad code of honor that ruled in the colonial society of that 18th century.
