People remember where they were the day Britain and France declared war on Nazi Germany in September 1939. Connie will certainly remember. As the owner of a well loved East End of London pub called The King’s Head, situated in London’s famous dockland area, she listened to the radio announcement along with her family and pub customers. The reader first follows Connie throughout the crucial war years, until it ended in August 1945; welcoming the Americans as her customers, her personal heartbreaks and drama-all set against the background of horrors and hardship that Londoners endured. Even when the war was officially over, it was still a difficult time for the British people. It is also a new phase of endeavor for Connie. Will she achieve the happiness she deserves?
