Hattie and Huey whisks us back to hot afternoons and dusty roads of Depression America to take us through a series of political events that lasted only eight days. But for Arkansas--and for the South--this week and a day grew into one of those legends of folklore. In 1932 Huey P. Long came to the state to help elect his seatmate, Hattie Caraway, to a full six-year term in the U.S. Senate. The campaign was unprecedented and impossible, but it happened. And she won--the first woman in U.S history to be elected to a full six-year term in the Senate.
