A introduction to the geography, history, anthropology, economics, politics, and art of the area of the Arabian peninsula that is now known as the country of Yemen. Schippman (U. of Göttingen) relies heavily on archaeological information for his reconstruction of the life of this region and this seems to be where his real interest lies, although it should be noted that there is little in the historical record concerning the area before the advent of Islam and that much of what is known has come from the work of archaeologists.
