Evolution of Key Mass Communication Concepts: Honoring Jack M. McLeod

On the occasion of McLeod's retirement from the U. of Wisconsin- Madison, Dunwoody and others at his campus and beyond pay tribute to his contributions to mass communication research. Contributors to ten chapters cite his innovative work on political socialization in a democracy, but also discuss alternatives to the McLeod approach. Douglas McLeod examines his father's broad influence through a citation analysis. Lastly, McLeod reflects on his early career, and such trends/concepts as expanded media use and effects, the conditional nature of theories, and the local community as the unit of analysis.
