Reading the World of Work: A Learner-Centered Approach to WorkPlace Literacy and ESL

Gallo (business and industry services, Northern Illinois U.) has taught in the area of worker education for ten years. She offers practical insights into some of the current issues and effective approaches in workplace literacy programs that will be helpful to all involved in planning and delivering these programs, including instructors, administrators, policy makers, instructional designers, and related professionals. Drawing from Paulo Freire's theories of critical literacy, the text examines the conflicting dynamics inherent in many workplace literacy programs and offers alternative approaches to learning which emphasize critical thinking, problem posing, and creativity, and are ultimately empowering for workers.
