This is a candid account of his everyday thoughts and activities as they happened. For this reason it is refreshing in its honesty. The work is illustrated by dozens of sketches the author made on the scene throughout the war, depicting daily life and activities, as well as the camps, harbors, bridges, airfields, and other engineering projects.
