Bioelectronic Applications of Photochromic Pigments

Dér and Keszthelyi (both of the Institute of Biophysics, Hungarian Academy of Sciences) present 20 contributions based on lectures given at a September 2000 NATO workshop on the utilization of biological materials in optical information processing that may serve as an alternative to traditional electronics. Dealing primarily with applications of bacteriorhodopsin (bR), the papers look at application of the color changes during photoexcitation of the molecules, electric effects, pH effects, and use as an alcohol sensor.
