Creatine Kinase and Brain Energy Metabolism: Function and Disease

Material from a recent workshop summarizes the existing knowledge on energy metabolism and the creatine kinase (CK) system in healthy and diseased brains and defines new directions for research. Chapters review fundamentals of brain energy metabolism and the CK systems and examine the effects of CK deficiency in muscle. The cellular and molecular biological aspects of the CK system are described in brain, heart, and skeletal muscle, and creatine transport and cellular neuroprotection are reviewed.
