Mechanobiology of Cartilage and Chondrocyte

The book edition of the journal Biorheology vol. 39, nos. 1,2 (2002) assembles 30 papers from the second international symposium on mechanobiology, held in Paris in April 2001. They cover the mechanical properties of cartilage and their modeling, the importance of the effects of mechanical stress on the physiology of the chondrocyte, and clinical applications and cartilage engineering. Specific discussions consider such topics as proteoglycan deposition around chondrocytes in agarose culture, the effect of mechanical stress on cartilage energy metabolism, the ultrasonic characterization of articular cartilage, and the role of cytokines in osteoarthritis pathophysiology.
