About the author
H. Brett Melendy spent the first twenty-six years of his life in Humboldt County. After earning a doctorate in American history from Stanford University, he taught California and United States history for over forty years. Now a professor emeritus at San Jose State University and the University of Hawaii, he has written seven books and numerous articles on twentieth-century California and Hawaii.
