This two-volume set presents information about weaponry, tactics, and modes of warfare worldwide, from ancient times to the present. About 100 topics are organized thematically in articles ranging from 2,000 to 7,000 words. Each volume starts with a series of overviews of major weapons groups, followed by major historical periods (arranged chronologically) and regions of the world and their contributions to weaponry, technologies, and strategies. Weapons overview articles contain sections on nature, use, and development. Geographically arranged warfare articles discuss political considerations where relevant, military achievements, military organization, and doctrine, strategy and tactics, and include a section on primary sources drawn upon by historians. Volume 1 ends with three transitional articles that chart major innovations in gunpowder warfare, and naval warfare from medieval to modern times. Contains 100-plus b&w photographs, line drawings, maps, and artists' renderings of weapons. Suitable for high school and above.
