In articles on Jordan, Morocco, Syria, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Algeria, Tunisia, Lebanon, and the Palestinian territories, contributors describe how these societies fare according to the composition and nature of their elite, how that elite comes to power and rejuvenates itself, and how that power is tied to oil.
