Women behind Bars: Gender and Race in U. S. Prisons

Recent years have witnessed an explosion in the number of women, overwhelmingly women of color, being held in American penal institutions. In this work, two professors of sociology at Howard U. seek an explanation for this situation, describe its current realities, and address other special concerns of race and gender in prison, including prisoner experiences of drugs, health, family, death, and reenter to society.
