The Cruise of the Alerte: In Search of Treasure

In 1889 E.F. Knight sailed the cutter Alerte on a treasure hunt to the uninhabited island of Trinidad off Brazil. He soundly skippered his crew of four paid hands and nine "gentlemen adventurers," each of whom raised 100 pounds. His account makes fascinating reading.
