Under the fiery leadership of Merritt "Red Mike" Edson, the 1st Marine Raider Battalion provided the vanguard of a U.S. Marine Corps experiment with lightly armed, mobile commando units in the Pacific during the early years of the war. From 1942 to 1943 Edson's Raiders fought seven critical and bloody battles in Tulagi, Guadalcanal, and New Georgia against some of Japan's most experienced jungle fighters. For their bravery, twenty-four Raiders had ships named in their honor. Alexander's narrative is enlivened with many vivid first-person accounts of these vicious, no-quarter battles with the Japanese that make this history a truly powerful and authentic account of the storied 1st Marine Raider Battalion exploits during World War II.
