The Last Generation is written as a series of stories within a story – all twisting and turning around one another, eventually delivering the reader to the same provocative conclusion. What would happen if there were no more children being born and the human population slowly died out?
Postaer did not choose a lightweight topic for his first book and he delivers it skillfully, with a masterful command of the language. His dialogue is full of street-savvy idioms; his scenarios are painted with sharp details that bring to life the characters and vignettes that provide the storyline. His craft of word-spinning is well-honed and he pulls the reader through the narrative with timing and precision.
As you make your way through the text, you are reminded of other literature with a similar theme. One of the most closely aligned works is T.S. Elliot’s work, “The Hollow Men,” which ends with,
This is the way the world ends
Not with a bang but a whimper
Postaer’s view is not what you might think, however. Is the end of the world that bad? You decide.
