The most challenging part of parenting is controlling a child's behavior. Many say it is not necessary. Others say it is not possible. Biblical principles, however, give unique insight into positive parenting by giving individuals intrinsic value by virtue of our creation by God and by defining morality and immorality not by behavior, but by the motivation behind the behavior. Even among Christian authors of parenting advise, there is division between emphasis on the authoritarian, "rod of correction,: and the permissive, :Let go and let God," philosophies. In contrast, using Biblical principles to guide parenting style and content provides for consistency in parenting, a broader view of parenting with a distinct goal, and a process in which the child can participate.
