Characterization of Tribological Materials discusses the use of advanced surface science characterization techniques in friction, adhesive and abrasive wear, boundary lubrication, contact fatigue, etc. While surface characterization of bearings, gears, seals, and other manufactured rolling and sliding surfaces is not yet routine in industry, it has become routine in the area of magnetic recording surfaces and will become more common in the near future in advanced quality control of processes and in the manufacture of a broad spectrum of precision components.
