William D. (Bill) Auman grew up in Johnston County, southeast of Raleigh and about 90 miles from the Atlantic Ocean. He moved to the Appalachian mountains in 1986, and resides with his wife Elizabeth at their home on the French Broad River in Madison County, just north of Asheville. The bandana in the photo may be his favorite form of hat, but he continues to wear many others. Perhaps best known as a trial and appellate attorney, he is a former USPTR tennis professional, and has spent years working part-time as a high school basketball and tennis coach. He presently serves as an adjunct professor at the University of North Carolina-Asheville, in addition to maintaining a law practice with offices in Asheville and Marshall.
