Mr. Innocent Smith skips joyously through life, his eccentric conduct amusing, irritating and baffling those around him by turns. When he finds himself accused of theft, polygamy, and attempted murder, he is saved from being carted off to prison or an asylum only by the suggestion of the sardonic Irish journalist Michael Moon, who proposes that they instead conduct a private court of inquiry right there.
