Now in its Second Edition, DEADLY DIVIDENDS is a cross-country chase thriller seasoned with mystery, humor, and adult romance.
A century-old army base near Chicago has been opened for domestic development -- a so-called post-war "peace dividend." But when California Architect Grey Harper arrives to take charge of a luxury housing project, he uncovers a situation of gravest concern among high-ranking federal officials. Within hours, they decide Harper's secret knowledge is cause for his elimination
That's the story Grey Harper tells to a vibrant and enchanting property manager, Elissa Bennett Pope, drawing her into a desperate race from the shores of Lake Michigan to the cliffs of the Pacific Coast.
But Federal agents tell a different story, of a murder on federal property with Harper as chief suspect. They say he shot a corporate boss over design flaws and then enticed Elissa into his escapade as an unwitting hostage. Heading the pursuit is an FBI Inspector aided by a ruthless mercenary who has been recruited by a Pentagon General. All the resources they need are readily available, officially or not.
Along the way, Harper adapts his architectural creativity to schemes of evasion, to Elissa's fascination and consternation. She can't decide whether Harper's mind is indicative of brilliance or madness. Either way, she can't help her attraction to him. She only recently found independence from a former abusive husband, by pursuing careers in real estate and amateur theatre. Harper, on the other hand, is secretive about his former wife and the mysterious ending of that marriage at his cliff-top home in Carmel, California.
As they cut across the Great Plains and through the Rockies, and down into the Bonneville Salt Flats, the dark specter of sudden death -- never far behind -- leaps ahead of them... and waits.
Readers should find the characters appealing, the twists and turns surprising, and the pace as quick as a Mercedes-Benz roadster. (It's the car Harper loves to drive -- and wreck.)
